It’s no secret that you need to take care of yourself to stay healthy.

It is true that self-care can be an effective way to manage mental health. Self-care refers to any deliberate action taken by an individual to improve their physical, emotional, or psychological well-being. Engaging in self-care activities can help reduce stress, improve mood, increase resilience, and promote overall well-being.

Research has shown that regular self-care practices can have a positive impact on mental health. For example, studies have found that engaging in physical activity can improve symptoms of depression and anxiety while practicing mindfulness meditation can reduce stress and improve overall psychological well-being.

It is important to note, however, that self-care is not a one-size-fits-all solution for managing mental health. Different people may find different self-care practices to be effective, and what works for one person may not work for another. Additionally, self-care should not be seen as a substitute for professional mental health treatment. If you are struggling with your mental health, it is important to seek the guidance of a mental health professional who can provide appropriate treatment and support.

There are many ways to self-care, but I can’t think of anything better than an arsenal of self-love exercises! Studies have shown that people who exercise at least three times a week are less likely to be depressed or anxious, leading to better sleep and improved moods. Loving yourself is a hot topic these days, and it’s taught in therapy sessions across the globe. You can find books on Self Love Exercises and how to elevate your mind from any bookstore you walk in! But, it’s not necessary to have tons of books before you can achieve self-love. Some easy Self Love Exercises work big time in mood elevation.

1. Self Talk

The first thing is to notice how you talk to yourself. Please don’t feel shy or embarrassed; we all do it! But how we speak with ourselves has great significance. Negative self-talk reinforces feelings like worthlessness and increases anxiety. In contrast, positive self-talk strengthens our confidence levels and works as a mood booster. Most people believe what they tell themselves. If you tell yourself you are ugly or fat, you unknowingly kill your confidence. Think good about yourself, and you will feel good in your skin.

It’s natural to feel bad when you make a mistake, but we must learn from them too. When I notice myself getting down on myself after an unfortunate situation or miscommunication with others, my first instinct is often self-criticism: “I’m so stupid!” But this doesn’t have to mean the end of everything; instead, try turning those negative thoughts around by rephrasing your original interpretation into something more nourishing and supportive, like “My friends were there for me even though they had their problems!”

2. Start Writing 

You’d be surprised to know how many people say they are rubbish at writing. And that’s ok because the best writers in history weren’t born with talent shining from their fingertips. They had to work hard for it! But you CAN write something brilliant if only for just one month of your life or more. I promise this won’t take long before these morning pages start producing results.

Write just three short pages about anything on your mind after bed before tea/coffee time. You can write anything good that you feel, anything new about that day or anything that made you feel good the previous day. This way, you will eliminate negatives with every passing day and bring positives to your daily routine. Sooner or later, but this will work and elevate your mood to start your day in a better way.

3. Affirmations 

Affirmations are an old yet effective way to relieve stress and negative emotions. Affirming your thoughts can bring you joy in life’s most challenging moments because it allows for self-love no matter what happens around us. Let’s explore how affirmations work as well as their benefits!

The first step is choosing an affirmation that speaks directly about the circumstance or concern at hand. There may not always be one single positive statement when dealing with anxiety disorders. Still, appending multiple phrases together gives sufferers more ways than “I’m strong” to look upon themselves.

Secondly, these phrases or statements must be spoken aloud to yourself daily, in the shower, while driving, or even before bed! Doing so will help embed them in your subconscious and make you more likely to act on these thoughts rather than destructive habits or behaviours that may have become second nature by this point.

And third, make sure your statements are believable and realistic, as well as positive! Avoid using negation in your phrases such as “I’m not scared” or “I’m not worthless.” Doing so will only negate the effects of the affirmation and make you feel worse.

There are many benefits to getting your blood pumping with some fresh air. Not only does it refresh the mind to take away all worries and stress, but it also has a positive effect on our emotional well-being. It can help increase self-esteem and improve the way you think about yourself!

Going for a walk in nature or even taking your dog out for some exercise is excellent advice. So, if it’s cold outside, bring extra layers with you to make sure you don’t get sick. And if it’s too hot, enjoy being in the sun for a little while!

And whenever possible, take your time and notice your surroundings. Whether it’s the trees or flowers, you will feel more relaxed than before!

Also, take a walk alone if you feel the need. Taking a walk will give you time to process your thoughts and emotions without interruption. Take out anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour each day for a brisk walk and get rid of unwanted body fat. Moreover, walking every day will protect you against cancer, heart diseases, stroke, high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes.

5. EFT ( Emotional Freedom Technique) 

EFT is a self-care technique found in the ancient Chinese treatment methods, is also known as “tapping.” The basic idea is to tap on specific points called the energy hot spots in your body to improve energy balance. This might sound strange, but it reduces your stress levels, increases positive feelings about yourself, and improves self-esteem.

EFT works best to analyze the root cause of stress, anxiety or negative thought. However, you are encouraged to seek help from a therapist before trying this out for the first time or search online for guidance on how to use it properly!

6. Mindfulness

Mindfulness can help you enjoy life more by focusing on the present moment. You’ll become less anxious, sad or angry because mindfulness helps to heal your mind from past trauma as well as preoccupations with future possibilities that may never happen.

Mindful living means being aware of our thoughts and feelings without judgement, so we can promptly act when making decisions. This leads towards self-love enhancement and greater confidence levels.

7. Gratitude 

Gratitude has been scientifically proven to enhance our overall well-being and mood. When we are grateful for the good things, it attracts more positive experiences and emotions into our lives.

It’s easy to get wrapped up in our problems and forget to be thankful for what we do have. However, practising gratitude can change the way we think and even make us more helpful to others.

One of my favourite ways to practice gratitude is by jotting down a list of things I’m grateful for every day. This could be anything from my bed to the sun shining down on me. It only takes a few minutes, but it makes a big difference!

Start a gratitude journal and write down four things you’re grateful for every day. Soon enough, you’ll have a long list of things to reflect on when times get tough. It’s important to be thankful for all the opportunities we have in life, whether big or small. Everything counts!

8. Avoid Toxicity

It’s important to surround yourself with positive people and avoid those who bring you down. If your friends make you feel bad about yourself, then it’s time for a change! Toxic relationships can lead to low self-confidence, anger and sadness.

On the other hand, if we spend too much time alone by choice, it can also lead to loneliness and emptiness. So try spending time with good friends who will lift your spirits whenever you feel down or blue!

Let go of any toxic relationships in your life because they are only going to drag you down further into a dark hole that’s hard to crawl out. Surround yourself with people who make you feel good about yourself!
